Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility (IDEA) Statement
The Australasian Cognitive Neuroscience Society (ACNS) recognises that cognitive neuroscience is strongest when it draws on a wide breadth of expertise, perspectives, and lived experiences. ACNS is committed to fostering an academic and professional environment in which all individuals are respected, valued, and supported. We affirm our commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility across all society activities, governance, and strategic priorities.
Our Commitments
Inclusion
We are committed to creating professional environments in which all members feel welcomed, respected, and able to contribute fully. ACNS does not tolerate discrimination, harassment, or exclusionary practices and promotes respectful dialogue across differing viewpoints.
Diversity
We value and seek to reflect diversity across race, ethnicity, cultural background, nationality, Indigenous identity, sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, neurodiversity, socio-economic background, career stage, caregiving status, disciplinary perspective, institution, and other factors. We seek to cultivate broad representation across membership and society activities.
Equity
We will actively identify and reduce structural and systemic barriers that limit participation, recognition, or advancement within the field of cognitive neuroscience. We will actively work towards equitable representation in leadership, committee membership, invited speakers, and award recipients. We will incorporate our commitment to equity in our decision-making processes.
Accessibility
ACNS recognises accessibility as essential to equity and scientific participation. We are committed to ensuring that our conferences, events, communications, and funding opportunities are accessible and inclusive by design.
In particular, ACNS will:
- Work to ensure conference accessibility, including consideration of physical access, sensory environments, hybrid/online participation options where possible, and clear communication of available supports and any limitations.
- Endeavour to reduce financial barriers to participation through transparent and equitable travel awards, registration supports, and grant schemes, with clear criteria and fair review processes.
- Design grant and award opportunities that ensure equitable access across career stages and institutions.
- Provide clear mechanisms for members to suggest reasonable adjustments for conferences, presentations, and society activities.
- Periodically review accessibility practices to improve inclusivity over time.
ACNS acknowledges that building an equitable and inclusive scientific community requires continuous reflection and improvement. We commit to regularly reviewing our policies and practices, and seeking member input.
